Through Experienced Eyes

During the 2015 season we’re going to take a page out of our friend Rod Pedersen’s book and run a CFL Pick ‘Em Competition with some great guys that just happen to be Roughrider Alumni.  We were going to do it anyway, but we'll post the picks and results here.  I figured you guys would get a kick out of that. At worst it's an opportunity to compare your picks with some guys that know the game inside and out.

Each week we’ll try and catch up with an individual who is involved in the competition and talk a little bit about what they’ve been up to and why they chose the teams that they chose during that specific week.

The best record at the end of Week 18 takes home $200, and more importantly, the bragging rights of beating every former pro involved.

Joining the competition will be former Roughrider, Renegade, and Bomber Mike Abou-Mechrek who contributes to the Leader Post in a great weekly column, and is a member of the Sportscage Team on 620 CKRM lead by our boy Roddy.

Marcus “Chunky” Adams has been raising his two amazing kids in Regina since leaving the CFL back in 2011.  He does a lot of work with Regina’s Correctional Facilities, but has a lot of other things on the go, so it’s great that he will take the time out to add his name in the ring.  We’ll catch up with Chunk soon.

Beloved Roughrider kicker, and 2007 Champ Luca Congi will be phoning his picks in every week, and knowing how competitive Luca is, he’ll be all over this comp.  Luca’s been busy working with a  consulting firm in Toronto, and recently got married to the love of his life, and long-time partner in crime Daniella.

Better Homes and Gardens Broker Matt Dominguez will also take part in this year’s pool.  The former Rider remains heavily involved in the communities of Saskatchewan to this day, and also coaches football and basketball with any spare time that he has in his busy schedule.  Matt and his energetic clan of kids will be at most Rider games this season so give him a wave when you see them.

I’m pumped to have Neal Hughes in on this as well.  It’ll be hard to get a hold of him in the summer because I have a feeling that he’ll be enjoying his well-deserved retirement out on one of Saskatchewan’s many lakes, catching every fish that resides in that body of water.  Neal was one of the most respected guys in the Saskatchewan Roughrider locker room and one of my favourite teammates to be around.

Former Rider and two-time Grey Cup Champ Marc Parenteauwill be in the mix, calling in his picks all the way from Ottawa where he is enjoying a successful post-football career in real estate.  Marc had a great pro career, but will always be known for one of the best TD celebrations in Grey Cup history in 2010 with his “crack the can and chug the brew” routine.  He’s also one of the funnier guys I know, so he’ll be great to catch up with as well.

I wanted to get one of the Old School Head Bangers in on this and there isn’t anyone better than Dan Rasovich.  The Plaza of Honour member currently helps to run the Saskatchewan Roughrider Alumni Association, and is also heavily involved in different community initiatives.  Raz is a great guy to sit and talk to and he’s a constant face at Roughrider games always interacting with fans.

Scott Schultz.  The newest member of the Plaza of Honour, and founding partner of Schultz-Gareau insurance is one of Ridernations favourites.  When he’s not ripping it up on Football Fridays with Rod on the Sportscage, one can find Schultzy rockin a GI and perfecting his new found love of Ji-Jitsu at Complete MMA.  Scott’s whole family is now heavily entrenched with Novauniao Jiu-Jitsu, just recently I got to watch his oldest daughter Anna in a Tourney...She’s good…Chuck Norris Good.

We round out the Pick ‘Em pool with one of the smartest guys to ever put on the Green and White.  I don’t need to say much about Mike McCullough, the entire CFL family knows about his unbelievable work with different organizations around the province, and his efforts on the field are well documented.

Mike also does as bang-up job on the CKRM Pre & Post game shows with Micheal Ball.

The guys love this sort of stuff, and a few of us are also in Rod's CKRM pool, so we'll be trying to double up with our picks!

Anyway, enjoy the games this weekend folks. We'll be unveiling a YouTube channel next week, and we're also figuring out the details on a great podcast with a great Co-Host.

Lastly, keep an eye out for our Pre-Game Primer that will be up tomorrow. Last year you guys loved the Primers we posted to Rods Blog, so it was a must that we keep pushing forward with it.

  1. Great Stuff!! Glad to see there were two that picked Ottawa to win.
It would be a wonderful thing if all were wrong on their picks of victory for Edmonton and Calgary. Upsets by the underdogs would be a nice way to start the season ('cept at Mosaic).

  2. If Montreal does end up with Bridge as their starter this year, how big an advantage is it ratio-wise to have a starting QB who is a "National"?
