OFFSIDES. Purple Rain Edition

This episode of OFFSIDES was cut on Friday, the day after the news that legendary musician, PRINCE, had passed away.  It's also the first podcast that Coach Etch and I have done since his "unproven quantity" assessment of Darian Durant's career heading into the 2016 season.  That comment raised some eyebrows with former teammates, fans, and media but the after affects for this show have yielded an extra 1/2 hour of content during todays offering.  #BonusBall

After a brief PRINCE segment where we pay our respects to one of the more colourful characters in the music game, we address the main topics on every CFL plate last week which were the new NFL/CFL Development Program for Officials, and the brand spanking new CFL drug-policy.  I really enjoyed leading the show off like this and I think you guys will love what our views on the development program are.

The discussion regarding the CFL Drug Policy was a fun one as well, where among other things, Etch brilliantly reminds us that performance enhancing substances, 'Do not do anything for ones football IQ..." and he's dead on.

Next up we talked about Justin Dunk's 2010 CFL "Re-Draft" that he posted on, and I wanted to use it as a look into the unparalleled ability of Jim Popp's scouting ability however Etch ends up giving you an awesome look into the way the whole Shomari Williams draft debacle went down!
This is by far one of the more valuable aspects of having a former coach co-host this show, because our listeners are going to enjoy hearing how Saskatchewan may have gotten "duped" during the 2010 CFL Draft.

To close out the Purple Rain edition of our OFFSIDES podcast, we absolutely had to go back and put last weeks rather controversial show to bed.  As you guys know, I (along with heaps of others) didn't agree with coach Etcheverry's view on the face of thee franchise here in Saskatchewan, and I challenged his view from where I saw Doubles' former teammate.  Not as an analyst, not as a member of the media, but from the viewpoint of a guy that has gone to war with #4.
It's very apparent, after listening to our lengthy discussion, that players and coaches see the game very differently at times.  For Etch's sake, he just wanted people to understand where he was coming from and felt that he was wrongly portrayed by many after his remarks.  I just wanted Etch to know that when you go to battle with a guy, it's never about stats in the end, it's about the unknown details that aren't in numbers.  The leadership in the film room, in the locker room, on the sidelines etc etc.  To me and many of his other teammates there's so much more to Durant's career that makes him anything but "unproven.

You guys be the judge.  We go at it for a while in this podcast all in an effort to put the whole thing to bed.  I will say this...June can't come quick enough!!!  Hope you enjoy the show!!!

OFFSIDES...Inching Closer To June

As we inch ever so slowly towards CFL training camps this edition of Offsides, the podcast, comes off the heels of the Saskatchewan Roughriders Mini-Camp in Vero Beach Florida.
Coach Etch and I cover quite a bit in this show, and considering that there really isn't that much happening around our league, I felt like we maximized the time we have fairly well.
To lead off, we discuss the curious situation that Kent Austin finds himself in now that Tommy Condell has left the Hamilton TiCats.  Even though both guys have been tied at the hip for quite some time now, and it's hard not to get enveloped by the shadow Austin casts, Tommy Condell is considered a brilliant coach.  Etch and I go into what the next steps may be in Hamilton.
Next up Etch and I tackle the greatness of Geno Auriemma, and Kobe Bryant (which seemed fitting because of his recent retirement...and I'm a huge fan) but the whole deal segway's nicely into a discussion about Mike Reilly re-upping in Edmonton through 2018.
The main thing that sticks out in my mind about this part of the podcast is that this discussion leads us into talking about a certain SSK QB who coach Etch refers to as "an unproven commodity."  It actually just sunk in now for me.  I'll leave you guys to be the judge of coach's argument, but I don't see eye-to-eye with him on this one.
Anyway, the podcast in its entirety is embedded below...Hope you guys enjoy it.
It's not to far from June now.  Mini-Camps happening all over the league will turn into the CFL draft and then we'll finally have CFL training camps upon us.  I for one can't wait!!!
To close out our most recent episode of Offsides we take a look at the enigma that has become the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.  I'm not going to lie to you guys, I don't have a clue what to expect from Mike O'Shea's squad.  I'm actually thinking of bringing a friend of mine that covers the team closely onto this show in order to see "what's what" as my buddy Scott Schultz would say.
